Table of Contents

Different Types of Dart Boards

The Standard “Clock” Dartboard

The Standard dartboard, also known as the Clock dartboard, is one of the most common and widely used types of dartboards in the world. You will find one in every home, every pub and every rec room. This type of dartboards tends to feature a double and treble scoring ring and an inner and outer bull’s eye. Standards dartboards come in many types of segments and wiring, and the main type include the round wire, the triangle or pyramid wire. They are fun, easy and fairly durable. But importantly, Standard dartboards tend to be more on the affordable side depending on the brand and model what you get.

The UK Regional Dartboard

This dartboard is pretty much an ode to the inventor of the game: the UK! And the UK regional dartboard usually includes the more popular Manchester dartboard and the Yorkshire dartboards. Starting with the Yorkshire dartboard, this type of board features double rings and a bull’s eye in the center. You have no outer bull’s eye.

Next, you have the Manchester dartboard, also known as the Log-end dartboard, that is undeniably the more unique and common boards of all. You hardly see it anymore these days. The Manchester board is made from wood as opposed to the traditional and commonly used sisal fibers. One fun fact is that you have to soak it in water when you are not using it! This is so that the board does not dry out and remains little softer thanks for the darts to penetrate. Also, A Manchester board is much smaller in size than your average dartboards. They also use a very different numbering system.

The Fives Dartboard

The Fives Dartboard is the more common type of dartboards there is.  And you could, technically, call it a clock dartboard too since it has 12 scoring segments, but we will let Standard dartboards keep this title.

The Numbering system on the fives dartboard consists of 12 segments that are always a multiple of.. . . …you guessed it, 5! And the way you play on this type of dartboard is pretty similar to the rules on the 501 standard games. You either do a straight start double finish or a double start double finish.

Bristle Dartboard VS Electronic Dartboard

Bristle Dartboard

We suppose dartboards can be classified in 2 other subcategories. And the first one is a bristle dartboard. A bristle dartboard is one of the oldest and most common types of dartboards. This type of dartboards is most commonly made out of high quality sisal fibers that are usually sourced from Africa. The sisal fibers are wound very tightly to create a hard, stiff surface. The darts of choice for bristle dartboards is steel tip darts, but mind you, there are many bristle boards that work fairly well with soft tip darts as well. The regulation size of a bristle dartboard is a diameter of 18 inches and a target area of 13.25 inches.

Bristle dartboards are the first choice of serious experts.  In fact, bristles dartboards are what are used by professionals! One of the nice things about this type of boards is that they last longer. This is due to the fact that sisal fibers are naturally self healing. Most bristle dartboards will in fact come with a moveable ring that allows you to rotate the segments for a more evenly penetrated surface. The downside? This type of board will demand manual scorekeeping from you.

Electronic Dartboard

And then, you have your electronic dartboards. Electronic dartboards are the stuff of the future. Most common electronic dartboards today are equipped and fed with technologies that playing darts so much easier and more efficient. You have a computer sensitive board which registers all score for you. No manual scorekeeping! Also, you get LED/LCD displays that allow for multiplayer. The best thing about electronic boards is that they offer numerous games and difficulty levels. Electronic dartboards are hands down the more convenient type of dartboard out of the 2. A regulation electronic dartboard should have an overall board size of 15.5 inches and a target area of 15 inches.

It is versatile, easy to use and play, and very smart! Some even offer voice programs! On the downside, electronic dartboards tend to be more expensive and require a little maintenance in the form of batteries, adapters, etc.

Which One’s Better?

Well, it all depend on you and the type of player you are. If you are just learning or want something purely for entertainment purposes, then look into electronic dartboards. On the other hand, if you are an expert and mean serious business, then throwing darts at the bristle dartboard is the way to go!Best electronic Dart board

Buying guide: Best Electronic Dart Board

1. Display

Electronic dartboards will mostly come in either LED or LCD display. We, personally, prefer LED oer LCD because it is brighter and sharper. Having said that, there’s nothing wrong with an LCD display, but LED is visibly better!

2. Type of Darts

You should only and only use soft tip darts on any electronic dartboard, unless stated otherwise. Electronic dartboards do not use sisal fibers and are therefore incapable of withstanding the impact from a steel tip dart. It will wear down the surface of the board, damage the darts, and cut down on the lifespan of the product.

3. Scorekeeping

Scorekeeping, luckily, is a piece of cake on electronic boards. The board will register score automatically and show it on the display screen. There’s no need for the manual stuff. What you want to make sure, however, is that you get a dartboard is has quality sensors and sensitivity. Mind you, many electronic boards are notorious for not registering score due to faulty sensors.

4. Games

One of the best things about electronic dartboard is that they offer a huge number of games you can play on it. It is obviously fun and exciting, but we recommend that you don’t go overboard. The more games it has, the more expensive it gets.

5. Number of Players

This aspect of our buying guide is entirely dependent on you. Some electronic dartboards can accommodate up to 8 players while some up to 10, or more! Pick something you think you’d be able to play with your group of friends and family. If it is for business purposes however, then try and get as much players it can accommodate.

6. Material

Every board is a little different from the next. But electronic dartboards are more or less made from a few common stuff like composite resin. Whatever it is made from, try and get something that looks and feels reliable. Bad boards will warp on you!

7. Power

Electronic dartboards are either battery powered or corded. Each have their own sets of advantages and cons. Battery may be more maintenance, but it is great for places where you do not have power outlets, great for travel and so on. An AC adapter lets you play for as long as you want, but it means you will only be able to play with a power outlet around.

8. Size

The regulation size for an electronic dartboard is a target area of 15 inches. However, nobody is going to charge you for playing outside of the regulation size. If you are new, need something for home, get something smaller..or bigger….it’s all good!

9. Sound Effect

One thing we think you should ABSOLUTELY ABSOLTELY get is a voice programmed electronic dartboard. This little feature can do such amazing and fun stuff! We personally like the heckler feature in many dartboards which insults you for throwing bad throws! It can obviously do so much more than just that. It can narrate the start and end of a game, give advices and so on.

10. Bounce Outs

Bounce outs are your enemy. You want to keep thing to a minimum. And one of the many ways to do is by getting an electronic dartboard that uses very thin, angular and steep wirings. Even better, get curved wires. This way, you dart will slip from it and penetrate into the target area. Also, try and get a board that comes with a spider that’s as flush to the board as possible. We also recommend getting a staple-free dartboard.

Where and How Should You Set Up The Dartboard?

Location

Most people will hang a dartboard just about anywhere they can fit their legs, but little do they know that a proper placement is ideal if you want to experience the most and best out of the game. The place where you want to install or hang your dartboard should have at least 9 to 10 feet of floor space from the wall to you. This distance should cover a throwing line of 7 ft and 9 ½ inches and 2 feet worth of space away from the throwing lines where you stand. In other words, the board should be 9 to 10 feet away from you. You should have enough space width wise as well. You should be able to flex, turn and move your arms in all directions. A stuffy, congested and clustered location will cost you the quality of your game! Keep these measurements in mind, and you set up your dartboard in just about any place- garage, rec room, bedroom, hallway, etc. Keep in mind that the wall on which you hang the board may experience some cosmetic damages for obvious reasons. . . .it’s all a part of the game!

How to Install Your Dartboard?

Speaking of which, how far up you hang your dartboard also makes a huge difference. Before you even unpack and begin fidgeting around with anything, you must make sure that you hang your board at least 5 feet and 8 inches from the ground level. Now, let’s get to install the board. Most dartboards come with a 3-hole installation system which allows you hand the board on drilled screws. Chances are that your dartboard has come with all the installation and mounting hardware already included in the box. Follow the instruction given and that’s it! That’s all there is to it! However, many users are reluctant to drill walls for aesthetic reasons. And for that, you can find many non-invasive mounting brackets sold in the market or online. We have even come across very strong adhesive tapes that hold you dartboard in place on the wall.

Maintaining a Dartboard

Buying a fancy and expensive dartboard does not guaranty a good lifespan. We have seen heaps of cases where high-end boards didn’t make it past the 3-month line. On the othetr hand, taking good care of your dartboard can even make a cheap, basic dartboard outlast the fancy stuff. Here are some of the things you could do:

  1. Do not compromise with dart tips. Some dartboards are made specifically for a certain time of dart tip. In other words, don’t use steel tips or soft tip darts where they are not supposed to be used!
  2. Do not wet your board. For some reason, go knows why, many people tend to spill drinks and water on their board. We could justice this at a bar, maybe, but there is no reason why this should happen in your homes or bedroom. Wet board equals mold and warping, remember that!
  3. Clean you dartboard every now and then. Don’t use a brush, or a mop, and don’t even think about using a damp cloth. Use a super soft, preferably microfiber, cloth to gentle wipe on the surface of the dartboard.
  4. If you are using an electronic dartboard that runs on battery, then we highly recommend that you make a habit of replacing them regularly. Also, if you thinking about storing away the dartboard for a long and indefinite period of time, then take out the batteries first.
  5. If you are using a bristle dartboard, then don’t forget to turn the moveable ring every now and then. Turning the ring turns the segment. This allows the more penetrated and concentrated segments to rotate away while you use the fresher segments. This, eventually, creates a more even target area.
  6. Use a dart sharpener to sharpen your dart tips. Blunt tips do not penetrate the target area well, and also damages the surface over a long time.

Conclusion

Well, that’s pretty much all we have to say regarding Dart Boards, be it bristle or electronic. Hope you can choose your right dartboard from the list. If you still have questions or feel we need to cover anything else feel free to contact us. See you soon in our next article. Till then adios!
