Best Darts Reviews 2023 & Buyer’s Guide | A Story of Barrels, Shafts & Flights

Best DartsDarts, as tiny as they are, are very difficult to get right. There is so much physics and design value involved that we can’t possibly expect anyone to hit the bull’s-eye first time without a little guidance. And that’s exactly where we come to play. Today we will be walking you through some of the Best Soft Tip Darts and Best Steel Tip Darts, and everything you need to know about them!

We have put together everything you need to know about darts and how to select the best ones for you. By the end of this article, we will have equipped you with all the guidelines and knowledge that will help you judge and select the Best Darts possible. All in you need right here, right now, in one place. Ready for darts 101? Good. Let’s start!

How to Choose the Best Darts?

Hold and Hand Feel

How to hold your dart is an essential feature in making the most out of your darts and your shots at the dartboard. It is very important, therefore, that you pick darts that sync with your holding technique. Some people like to hold it like they would hold a pencil or pen. And some hold it way back or way front. This remind us that if you tend to hold your darts more at the front, then getting a front-weight darts where it is its heaviest at the front, is the best thing. And of course vice versa for a back-weighted dart. Essentially, you want your hand to sing through the dart. You should be very comfortable holding, and it should complement your techniques and throwing force.

Grip

This also brings us to the case of grip. Most darts will almost always have special textures and constructions on the barrel. This is essentially to make for a more effective grip. Each type of construction offers a different type of grip. It is also important in making sure that the dart doesn’t slip out of your fingertips, especially if they are sweaty or oily. Having said that, there are many people who feel they get a better grip using a plain, non-textured barrel.

Choosing Between Soft Tip and Steel Tip

We cannot even begin to emphasize the importance of choosing the right dart tip. Many people have this perspective that, somehow, steel tip is better than soft tip because . . .. . it’s steel (?!). Well, that’s far, far from the truth. Anyone with proper and real expertise will tell you to start with a soft tip. These are great for learning and relatively cheap too. For beginners we recommend soft tips. After you master the basics, we reckon you could work your way up to steel tip darts. We highly recommend using a mix of both instead of sticking to just one.  But to make the choice more transparent and easy, we will now look at the 2 types of tips more elaborately!

Soft Tip Darts VS Steel Tip Darts

Soft Tip Darts

Best Soft Tip DartsA soft tips dart is basically darts that come with a plastic point. These types of darts tend to be more or the lighter side.. . . compared to steel tip darts. This gives them greater speed and lightness in the air. However, you can find many soft tips darts that are as heavy, if not heavier, than some steel tip darts. Soft tip darts are usually thrown at plastic board with molded holes in it which accept the tips into the holes. These types of farts darts also tend to less expensive than steel tipped ones. Well, most of the times, at least. This makes them perfect darts for practice and warm-ups. Especially with the kids and beginners. Speaking of which, soft tip darts are a lot safer than steel tipped darts, for obvious reasons!

Steel Tip Darts

Best Steel Tip DartsNow, let’s come to steel tip darts. Steel tip darts are the more popular option for people who know what they are doing. These darts have a hard, steel tip which also increases the weight of the overall dart, somewhat. In return, steel tip darts offer you a much better sense of stability and balance. Having said that, there are heaps of steel tip darts that weigh as little as soft tip ones. Steel tips are also thrown at bristle dartboards. They do tend to be a tad more expensive than soft tip darts, but you can find very affordable ones too. It is ultimately all about the construction and materials used (we will cover it soon in our buying guide so stay tuned!). Steel tip darts are majorly used experts and professionals.

Buying Guide: Features to Consider

Weight

When you are out and about searching for the Best Darts possible, we first and foremost need you to consider the weight aspect. The weight of a dart is going to dictate and manipulate a lot in terms of user comfort, speed and stability.

Most commercial darts (steel of soft) tend to be within the range of 15 grams to 28, and higher.

Mind you, that a lightweight start will add speed, but skimp on stability while a heavier dart will do the exact opposite. It’s all about finding that middle point and balance where you get both speed and stability.

Also, for arched shots, lightweight darts do well while for straight shots, heavier darts are the way to go.

As a rule of thumb, we recommend getting around 18 to 20 grams for soft tips and 20 to 24 grams for steel tip darts.

Barrel

No matter what anybody or any expert says, we like to believe the barrel of the dart is the most important part. Barrel is what holds the point and point and shaft.

They come in various diameters and textured exterior for grip. Lower quality and cheap darts will have barrel made out of brass. For a more high quality and high performance experience, you could spend little to nothing and get tungsten barrels.

Today, most tungsten barrels are made in 70%, 80% and 90%. The remaining percentage counts for the nickel content.

The higher you go on the tungsten percentage, the better the quality. Professionals stick to 90% and above while beginners tend to go back and forth 70% and 80%.

Shaft

The shaft is what connects the barrel and the flight. These are usually made out of various types of aluminum which are then coated for better durability. Keep in mind that the shaft on low quality darts tends to unwind or get loose, so be aware.

Grip

We have already previously stated the importance of grip on a dart. And the type of grip you prefer depends entirely on your taste and preference and comfort. A knurly, textured grip is popular, but many people also prefer more low-profile styles and finishes.

Finish

Speaking of which, in order to stop your darts from rusting or corroding, it is very important that you get something with a proper finish on them.

Usually, you will have a layer paint that features the manufacturer’s stickers, logos, etc. But for a more premium finish, opt for titanium.

A titanium finish is very thin and adds almost no weight to the dart. It therefore does not affect your shots or throws. It also does a better job at preventing corrosion.

Flight

The flight of a dart is the tail of the dart. Many companies and manufacturers try to put their own spin to manipulate the aerodynamic aspect of it.

Some common types of flights include standard, kite, teardrop, etc. Each has their own set of advantages and drawbacks, so choose wisely.

Brand

Now, here’s something on our buying guide that is very personal. We really can’t decide for you the brands you should like or prefer.

Having said that, there are a few brands that have made a name for themselves in the industry due to their quality darts.

Some of these brands include Bottlesen, Centaur, Viper, Black Widow, and so on. Check out our reviews of the Best Soft Tip Darts and Best Steel Tip Darts to as we introduce you to some of the best darts from the best brands.

Cost

And finally, you have the price. The cost of a dart will obviously vary depending on the quality, brand and construction.

You can find darts as cheap as a few cents, and then as expensive as $200! It all boils down to the make, model and manufacturer.

But for a fairly high quality and pro grade dart set, we recommend setting aside at least a hundred bucks or so.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) About Darts:

What types of darts should I use?

Well, that’s a very tricky question since a lot of factors decide the type of darts you should use. If you are a beginner, then we recommend using a lightweight and soft tip dart.

Slowly work your way up to more heavy and steel tip darts. You should also consider a few other things like grip, experience level, flights, etc. Refer to our buying guide for more info.

What is the best weight of darts to use?

For soft tip darts, we recommend using 18 grams or around. And for steel tip darts, we recommend 22 to 24 grams.

Can you use soft tip darts on bristle dartboard?

There is absolutely no reason why we see you can’t do it. Having said that, mind you that bristle dartboards is assigned to steel tips darts for a reason.

Soft tip darts will never stick into a bristle board quite a well as a steel tip can. Bristle boards are a little more demanding. Something only steel tips can deliver!

What is the best darts for beginners?

For beginners, we recommend something soft tip and lightweight with good grip. Look into the Fat Cat Darts and Wolmund Soft Darts. You get soft tips and plenty in the pack! Great for practice.

What weight darts do the professionals use?

There’s nothing a pro can’t do. Professionals use darts that vary massively in weights. Some use light, some use heavy. But more the heavy, of course. Most professionals will use darts that are around 24 to 26 grams, or above.

What are some of the best dart flights to use?

There are at least a dozen, if not more, types of dart flights out there. And they all come in different dimensions, shapes, sizes and whatnot. Each, clearly, come with their own set of benefits and disadvantages.

We, personally, think that the standard flight is great for learners and beginners. For speed, we prefer the kite or teardrop. And for balance and smoothness, we like the no.6 shape.

Essentially, it is all about finding the balance. Sometimes you get more of one thing, and less of the other. And that’s exactly what the game is all about!

Does the length of my dart’s shaft affect my shots?

That’s a great question. And yes! It does affect your shots. A longer shaft length will move the center of gravity of the dart to the back.

A shorter shaft will do the exact opposite! If you tend to throw darts by holding it more at the back, then getting a longer shaft is a smart move. If you prefer holding it more at the front, then get a shorter shaft. Simple as that!
